Three filters. One activated carbon and two HEPA. Removes ultrafine particles up to .02 microns including bacteria, viruses and other pathogens
HEPASilent
Air is passed through a particle charging chamber which ionizes it.
This is then passed through a HEPA filter. The efficiency of the filteration increases as the charged particulate matter sticks to the filter surface.
Ionizer
Releases negative ions that cause pollutants to stick together which makes them heavy and so they settle down or stick to surfaces in the room.

Glossary

[1] Coverage area (Sq ft): Maximum recommended floor area of the room where the air purifier can be operated. An air purifier operating in an area larger than recommended will not clean the air so well.

[2] HEPA filter: Nuclear age technology that efficiently filters the tiniest particulate matter from air. A true HEPA filter is supposed to filter 99.97% of particles larger than 0.3 microns from air. HEPA filters are made of folded sheets of material made of thin strands that trap particles and clean air.

Read an awesome explanation of how HEPA filters work on Appliance Science (Opens a new browser window)

HEPA filter in action from Sharp Indonesia Youtube Channel

[3]Tech USP: All manufacturers have HEPA filters and most offer models with activated carbon filters. However, some manufacturers offer patented technologies that differentiate them from the others.

[4]Air Changes Per Hour (ACH): The number of times an air purifier filters the volume of air in a room in an hour.

Higher the ACH better is the performance of the device. An ACH of 3 means that in 1 hour the air purifier filters the air in the room 3 times.

The ACH depends on the Clean Air Delivery Rate or the CADR and the volume room where the air purifier operates. The volume of the room is the floor area multiplied by the height.

You can use this calculator to calculate the ideal CADR of your room based on the room area and the ACH that you need. The calculator assumes the room height to be 9 feet.

Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR): The volumetric rate (m³/hour) at which the air purifier cleans air.

[4.1] ACH claimed by the company: Several manufacturers like Honeywell quote the ACH based on the maximum square foot area of the room

[4.2] Calculated ACH: Some manufacturers do not quote the ACH so I have calculated the range using the maximum and minimum area of coverage.

[5] Smart Functionality via mobile application: Three brands, Honeywell, Blueair and MI offer models that can be controlled remotely using mobile applications on wi fi. These apps help one monitor the air quality level and even control these devices from anywhere.

[6] Customer service quality: While I was conducting research for this blog, I had to contact these companies because I had a lot of questions. I rated these companies based on how accessible and knowledgeable the customer service was. This is an indication of how good your experience of owning these devices will be. I was pretty impressed with the customer service departments of Honeywell and Sharp who were equally responsive and helpful.

I was unable to even get in touch with Philips and Pureit customer support. I do not even think that they have a customer service department.

[7] Filter Life: The HEPA and activated carbon (if available) filters need to be replaced as they get clogged with pollutants. The filter life is how long the filters will last before they need to be replaced. Honeywell and Blueair quote filter life in hours of operation while Sharp and MI quote the filter life in years.

Remember that the actual filter life depends on the air pollution conditions. I read a review of Philips air purifiers on Amazon in which the buyer said that the filters needed to be changed in one month during November 2017 which was a really bad month in Delhi for air quality.

Buy Kent Air Purifiers on Amazon.in

Details about Kent air purifiers are hard to come by. The customer service is more interested in arranging a demo and won’t answer a lot of questions about features etc.

I got a demo at my office and was not really satisfied with the device.

Some issues with Kent air purifiers

Air quality indicator is misleading

The air quality indicator indicated good air quality within 5 min of operations. I had used and reviewed a Blueair 680i air purifier before and I could see the air quality improve little by little and was surprised that the Kent air purifier indicated an immediate change. The demo technician told me that the indicator measured the air quality on the air outlet and not the air quality in the room. He told me that the indicator indicated that the air purifier is working which is sort of weird as I would rather want to know if the air quality in the room has improved.

Kent has an ionizer that produces negative ions

Kent has an ionizer in addition to HEPA and activated carbon. Negative ionizers have several issues

  • Negative ionizers produce ozone that can cause irritation and breathing problems
  • Negative ionizers cause dust to precipitate around the air purifier causing the wall to get coated with dust

  1. Thanks for sharing your research. Very comprehensive.
Question still remains for room size of 250 square feet which one is the best and good value for money?

    • Thanks a lot for the compliment Rajiv Ji. In this blog I have simply compared all the available brands and models and have left the decision to you. I had seen a lot of ‘best air purifier’ guides on the internet which were recommending one brand or the other and it was evident that these were posts put up by the same companies so I decided to do a comparison and leave the decision to the reader.

  2. Appreciate your efforts. Can you please suggest mi best Air purifier for my home (bed room size 260 sq ft) amongst Honeywell Air touch i8, Philips ac2887 and mi. Purchase will be done based on your detailed verdict
    Awaiting your reply.

  3. Suresh Chander Gupta

I compliment you on great efforts. However I would like to get guidance on one major issue. The relation between Coverage area and CADR. They interrelated and Coverage area as well as ACH can be calculated from CADR. If room height is same then the ratio of Coverage Area /CADR should be approximately same at least for same technology say Air purifiers using Activated Carbon & HEPA. This ratio should go up with addition of Pre-filter and Ionizers etc.
The variations range in this ratio for 5 top companies shown above is as under:
    Sharp from 1.19 to 1.47
    Philips from 1.92 to 2.57
Blue Air from 0.91 to 1.4
    Kent from 0.62 to 1.16
    Purit from 1.89 to 2.5
The ratio for kent is lowest although it uses Ionizers also. The ratio is much higher for Philips and Purit.
Please guide if my analysis and rationale is wrong.
I intend to purchase Air Filter immediately. Based od above data I had decided to buy Philips AC 2887/20, Price is also reasonable (available at 17 K).
Please guide if this Air filter is good choice.
Please reply as soon as possible.

    • Sir, I wish to compliment you on the technical take on the CADR and the coverage area.
There is indeed a connection between the CADR and the coverage area but this relation affects the air changes per hour or the ACH. (CADR is volumetric flow and area is in sq meters).
Based on the CADR and the coverage area you can calculate the ACH using this online calculator
      https://smarthomeguide.in/cadr-ach-air-purifier/
So a good air purifier is the one that has a ACH > 4. For the Philips 2887 the CADR is 333 and coverage area is 851 sq feet so for the maximum coverage area the ACH comes out to be around 1.5 which is not good (This formula assumes 9 ft height)
What is the coverage area that you desire, using the CADR iterate the ACH to find out if it is adequate.
I do have to say that some not so honest manufacturers quote the ACH at a height of just 2 feet.
Pre filters and ionisers have nothing to do with the CADR as that depends on the volumetric flow of the device which is a function of the fan capacity. I hope that helps. 🙂 Again thanks a lot for the logic.

      –Ashutosh

  4. Hi Sir,

Kudos to you for such a detailed guide and enabler.
I would have wished very much if you could suggest just one to go for. For an average bedroom.
I am looking for the best value for money in the long run. I stay in Delhi.

If you could suggest one of the option I have selected:
    1.1. Honeywell Lite Indoor HAC20M1000W
    1.2. Honeywell HAC25M1201W 53-Watt

    2. Sharp FP-F40E-T 31-Watt Air Purifier

Please do reply. Thank you so much! Wish you all the best and Happy Diwali!

    • Amar ji thanks a lot for your compliment.

I did not want to recommend just one as I wanted to list compare all the models available in India and leave the decision on the buyer.

However out of the 3 I would recommend the Sharp air purifier because in addition to HEPA filter it has the plasmacluster technology that is a proven way of disinfecting the air and is used in food facilities around the world.

  5. Hi Sir,
I compliment you on great efforts. Wonderful article.

  6. First of all, hats off for the most detailed and seemingly unbiased article I have read on air purifiers. I have a question regarding an air purifier not mentioned in the above article : Dyson. I could not find verifiable data about dyson anywhere. I did read an article that stated how the dyson filter was small and lacked the thickness. However almost all articles praise its efficacy, which frankly speaking Id take with a pinch of salt given the brand value and corporate strategy. But I feel I can trust your expertise. So simply put, could you please guide me whether dyson is truly worth the money? (I do not care about its good looks) Thanks sir.

    • Thanks for your comment Nikhil 🙂

I have heard and even seen ads of Dyson air purifier. It is a known brand in the states as I have come across it during my research. However
I cannot comment on how it works as I haven’t done any research on it yet. Let me look at the specs after work and answer that question please.

    pls suggest

    • Gaurav Ji. Thanks a lot for your comment.
Under 10K only Purit and MI purifiers are priced. I would not recommend Purit as I did not find anything special about them and there is absolutely no customer service or support. MI air purifier is a good product. It is available on amazon India at a discount right now.

    2. Sharp FP-F40E-T
    3. Blueair Pure 211

I notice that the sound level of the Sharp is the lowest plus it also has an ioniser.
Please advise which one of the above I should go for,.

    Many thanks

Thanks a lot for the appreciation. You have shortlisted three good Air Purifiers, each one has it’s advantages.

      1. Honeywell Air Touch I8 – Good product from a great company. It has good customer support and good service. HEPA + Activated carbon
      2. Sharp FP-F40E-T – This has a good HEPA filter plus the plasmacluster tech. This is not an ioniser which is harmful but a tech used to sanitize air in food and pharma manufacturing. So based on technology this is the most superior.
      3. Blueair Pure 211 – Good company and this one is manufactured in Sweden, but again it is HEPA only.
