When people say that ‘I am great in bed’, my mind associates it to sleeping! Honestly, good quality sleep is something to be really proud of. But most people don’t seem to appreciate the true ‘Art of Sleeping’, evident from the fact that they pay so little attention the mattress they perform this art on. A comfortable and clean mattress is directly related to our quality of sleep. Lets look at how to go about it.
Mattress Cleaning Steps
Beating the surface of the mattress with a broom or fabric is not enough to get a clean mattress. It has to be cleaned thoroughly. Mattress Cleaning involves Vacuuming, Stain Removal, Deodorizing and Disinfecting the mattress so that your mattress is free from sweat, dust, dust mites and all kinds of allergens. Here are the steps in detail:
1. Vacuum the mattress
Strip your mattress down, take out your vacuum cleaner and fix its upholstery attachment. Start at the top surface of the mattress in overlapping strokes, followed by the sides of the mattress in the same way. This will remove all the food crumbs, pet hair and other dust and dirt accumulated over time.
2. Mattress Stain Removal
Mattresses, more often than not acquire blood, urine, vomit and food stains. Treating it immediately with cold water and a little dish soap or hydrogen peroxide is the ideal way to go, but what are we if not lazy. So, here are some methods by which you can clean mattress stains which have been aged:
- Take 1/4 Cup Hydrogen Peroxide with 1 tbsp each of liquid dish soap and table salt.
- Rub this paste into the stain and let it dry. Then scrape the residue off.
- Dab at any remaining stain with a white rag dipped into hydrogen peroxide, rotating the rag as the stain lifts off.
- Dissolve 3 tbsp. Baking Soda in 1 cup of Hydrogen Peroxide then add a drop or two of Liquid dish soap.
- Dab this solution onto the spot.
- Scrape off the solid particles of the vomit first.
- Sprinkle the mattress with hydrogen peroxide to remove residual stains.
- As it begins to fizz, constantly mop the stain with a dry white cloth until no more residue comes off.
Food & Drink Stains
- Create foam with diluted mild detergent in water
- Apply ONLY the foam to the mattress, and not the soapy solution.
- Wipe the area with a soft rag dampened with lukewarm water.
Sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda over the entire surface and let it sit for a couple of hours. It will absorb any excess liquid from the stain removal process, and leave your mattress smelling fresh and clean. Then vacuum off the baking soda from the surface and the crevices of the mattress
4. Air it Out
A day out in the sun is an essential treatment for a mattress. The fresh air and UV rays remove any residual moisture and eliminate bacteria.
5. Cover to Protect
A smart way to protect your mattress is to use a Mattress Cover. They provide a shielding layer against future dirt and stains, and can be thrown into the washing machine on a regular basis.
