Why are you getting your home painted?

This seems like a silly question, but it is not.

You have to know the exact reason for getting your home painted. This will affect a number of your decisions, ranging from the type of paint and paint brand to go for, to the amount of money to invest in painting.

Here are all the reasons for why you might want to get your home painted and how it matter?.

  1. Painting new home or office

You might want to get your brand new house or office painted after the construction is over. The painting procedure used at a new site is different from repainting procedure. Extensive base (surface) preparation is done on a new painting site and it takes a longer time as painting has to be done on fresh plaster. To know about new painting process, see our New Painting Process section.

  2. Repainting of an existing home or office

The procedure followed while repainting an existing home or office is different. The base/surface preparation is easier because of existing paint. The cost of repainting is typically less than fresh painting. Go to Repainting Process section for details.

There are various reasons why you would get your home interiors repainted:

  • Change in Existing Color

You might be bored of the existing colors or textures on your walls and wish to give it a new look by getting it repainted. In this case you should choose a painting contractor that provides color consultancy, so that you can visualize how your home will look like after repainting.

  • Special Occasion

You might want to get your walls repainted for an occasion like a wedding or  for festivals like Diwali or Eid. In this case, it is crucial that the painting is done within a deadline. Hence, it is important to hire a reliable painting contractor who can get the job done on time. Typically, local contractors are bad at meeting deadlines as they undertake multiple projects at once which are incapable of handling. We suggest you to hire a reliable professional painting service provider.

  • Dampness & Waterproofing Issue

Dampness & water seepage can wreck havoc on painted walls. In such a case, it is important to fix the waterproofing issue first and then repaint.
You can read more about how to get rid of dampness in walls and ceilings before painting in our Comprehensive Waterproofing Guide Blog.

3.Local Painters/ Contractors

You can get in touch with local dealers and contractors either through contacts or references from friends and family. Paint dealers can also refer you to local contractors.

  1. This is the cheapest option.

  1. Poor quality of the service

The quality provided will be inferior. Since the contractor only cares about the completion of the project and not about customer satisfaction, he focuses on the fastest way to complete the job, irrespective of the quality expected by the customer.

  2. Lack of cleanliness

Contractors rarely use masking which leads to paint spots on window frames and switch boards. They also do not help in covering furniture.

  3. Job not completed on time

Local Contractors rarely complete the assigned project on time because they undertake multiple projects at the same time. They usually keep shifting labor from one site to another and end up missing deadlines.

  4. Theft and security problems

Most contractors hire temporary laborers without a background check which can threaten home security.

  5. Material theft

Local contractors sometimes use only a part of the material that they have purchased and pilfer it for other sites in order to save costs. Hence, you end up being charged  for something  they have not even used for painting your home.

The wall is smoothened using sand paper preparing it for application of putty or primer.

Things to keep in mind while painting is being done

Our boss, Samrat Goyal got his home re-painted recently. We asked him for some tips or crucial points to keep in mind while home painting is being done.

This is what he advised:

  1. Take care of your valuables

It is essential for you to take necessary care of your valuables. Inform the painters about  fragile products or ones that need to be moved before commencement of the painting.

  2. Masking

Make sure that the painter is using masking on objects. In case this is not done, paint drops can leave stains on switch boards, windows and doors. Make sure to cover furniture to avoid droplets and stains.

  3. Supervision

Even though the contractor is supposed to take care of the material and the labor, you need to supervise the work and  keep an eye on the material purchased. There is a chance that he might charge you for a particular paint but use another one or use less paint.  This is why it is a better choice to assign the painting project to a professional company. They provide you with an estimate of the project beforehand and buy all the material within that estimate and also complete the job within the deadline.

  4. Start with Kitchen in case of repainting

Kitchen painting is completed first,  so that you can prepare your meals without trouble.

  5. Painting is carried out room by room

If you’re living in the house during the painting process, make sure the painting is carried out room by room and not all at once. This way you can shift from one room to another without facing any issues.

We hope this guide proved helpful to you and gave you good info regarding interior painting!

We will be more than happy to know your comments and suggestions if any!
