DIY cleaning tips using common household items
Did you know that there is no need to buy expensive cleaning aids as easily available household items can be used as cleaning products? In this blog post we will share some amazing cleaning tips using items easily available. Not only are these products easily available but they are also 100% natural, safe and most importantly cheap. We will talk about three products: White Vinegar, Hydrogen Peroxide and Rubbing Alcohol (Isopropyl Alcohol).
Product # 1: White Vinegar
This is nature’s very own stain remover and multi-purpose cleaner. It is cheap, safe and easily available. Please note that when we say vinegar, we mean the white stuff and not the red one that is used to flavour Chinese food. White vinegar is essentially diluted acetic acid and is available in food stores. We spotted a bottle of Tops vinegar in store shelves priced at Rs. 35 for 610 ml, which is pretty cheap to say the least, so you should stock up and use it on a regular basis.
So here is what you can do with White Vinegar
DIY sink cleaner
Fed up of trying to clean the stains in your kitchen sink? A stainless steel sink surface can pick up many stains and can get contaminated with bacteria and other nasty stuff and a rinsing might not be good enough. What you need to do is to give your sink a thorough cleaning at least once a week using an inexpensive household cleaner made from white vinegar and some other things.
You will need
- Liquid dish washing soap like Pril or Vim liquid
- White Vinegar
- Baking Soda
- It is very important to thoroughly rinse the sink before it is cleaned. Use a lot of water to clean any food residue or juices.
- Sprinkle baking soda on the surface and work it into a paste using an old toothbrush and then rinse.
- Soak some paper towers in vinegar and line the sink with them. Let this sit for 20 minutes and then remove.
- Rinse the sink with warm water mixed with a bit of dish washing liquid.
- Thoroughly clean the faucet using a solution of dish washing liquid and water. Use white vinegar for tough spots. After you are done wipe the sink and faucet with a clean soft rag and enjoy the shine!
P.S: Do not use any abrasive chemical like bleach or acid as this can damage the shine and the look of the sink. Use a soft sponge to clean the sink so that there are no scratches in the finish. You can read more about this here.
DIY Homemade carpet and mattress stain cleaner
Cleaning up stains on carpets and mattresses can be such a task. There are many remedies available in the market but most people do not know that Vinegar coupled with other common household items can be used as a universal stain cleaner.
- In case of a light stain dissolve 2 tablespoons of salt in ½ cup vinegar and rub this mixture into the stain. Wait for it to dry and then vacuum off.
- For tougher stains add 2 teaspoons of borax powder (available at chemist shops, borax is used as an antiseptic) to one tablespoon of vinegar and 1 tablespoon of corn starch (used for cooking and easily available in food stores) to make a paste. Rub this into the stain using a cloth and let it sit for two days and then vacuum.
- For fruit juice stains add 1 tablespoon of common detergent to 1 ½ tablespoons of white vinegar and mix this in two cups of water and use this to clean.
DIY crystal glass cleaner
Your pretty crystal glasses can get cloudy and dirty due to hard water and other stuff and cleaning them can be hard and frustrating. Most people do not know that vinegar can be used as an all-natural hassle free cleaner for glass and crystal ware. All you need to do is soak crystal ware in a solution of vinegar and water. Do remember to do this in a plastic tub or bucket as a soaking in a sink can chip the glass. Remove after 30 minutes and wash with a dishwashing liquid and watch it shine. DIY Microwave Cleaning Technique
A microwave oven picks all kind of dirt and odours from food. Cleaning a messy oven takes a lot of time and a lot of scrubbing and is a daunting task for even the most dedicated homemaker. You will be tempted to jump with joy after reading this hack that allows you to clean up a microwave in just 5 min.
All you need to do is mix 1-2 tablespoons of vinegar in 1-2 cups of water in an open, microwave safe bowl and let it spin for 5 minutes. The vinegar and steam combination will get to work breaking those stains. Remember not to open the door for at least 2 minutes after the microwave has been turned off to let the steam do the work. Now all you need to do is open the door, remove the water bowl (carefully as it should be very hot!) and wipe the insides with a clean cloth. You will be amazed to see how easily the stains are removed.
Please note that there is always a slight chance that boiling water in a microwave can superheat. It is a good idea to put a toothpick in the water to distribute the heat and keep it safe.
Product # 2: Hydrogen Peroxide
This miracle cleaning aid is probably the best deodorizer and antiseptic available. Hydrogen Peroxide is essentially water with an oxygen free radical which does all the cleaning. It is safe (water and oxygen never harmed anyone), cheap and easily available at any chemist shop. Remember to use a 3% solution.
DIY Refrigerator / Oven Cleaning
Hydrogen peroxide is a great way to clean and deodorize refrigerators and ovens. It is a great cleaning aid and you do not need to be concerned about toxicity as it is safe. Just use a clean cloth dipped in peroxide solution and wipe the refrigerator or oven clean. You will be surprised on how easily the stains can be removed and how fresh it will smell.
DIY toilet cleaner
Pour half a cup of hydrogen peroxide solution into the toilet bowl, let it stand for around 20 minutes and then scrub clean. Now there is no need to invest in expensive toilet cleaning chemicals. Hydrogen peroxide has antiseptic and antibacterial properties as well.
Pre-treatment of stains
Soak stained laundry for some time in a 3% solution of hydrogen peroxide before putting it into the washing machine and watch the stains disappear.
Cleaning kids’ toys and play area
Handling kids can be such a handful. If you are a parent who is looking for natural and non-toxic disinfectant for sanitizing toys and objects that your kid touches, your search ends now. It is a good idea to put a 3% solution of hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle so that it can be used to wipe and clean things that kids touch. Peroxide decomposes to water and oxygen, so it is perfectly safe to use again and again.
Product # 3: Rubbing Alcohol (Isopropyl alcohol)
This is the stuff doctors use to clean wounds and to clean skin before administering an injection. It is easily available in chemist shops and is cheap too. Rubbing alcohol is a great cleaning aid as it dissolves dirt and grime and has antibacterial characteristics. There are many ways that rubbing alcohol can be used for cleaning and disinfection around the house. Here are some useful cleaning hacks.
DIY glass cleaning solutions
You can make your own glass cleaner using 1 cup of rubbing alcohol, 1 cup water and 1 tablespoon white vinegar (Didn’t I just tell you what a great cleaning aid white vinegar is?). Just mix all these ingredients in a spray bottle and use it on glass and watch the grime come off.
DIY Ink stain remover
Soak your ink stained shirt in rubbing alcohol for a few minutes before washing it and watch the stain disappear.
