What to look for when buying the best vacuum cleaner for home
I want to buy the best vacuum cleaner for my house. The one that we owned conked out some years ago and somehow we never thought of buying a new one, until now. There are a lot of questions in my mind. Should I go for a dry vacuum cleaner or a wet one? What model should I choose? And above all, what specifications should I look for while making the final buy decision. The vacuum cleaner price will be a concern, It usually is for us Indians as we want value for money. As usual, my search begins online and that is when I started to get confused. As usual, there were too many options to choose from; a popular e commerce website listed nearly 31 brands and so many models that my head starts to spin! So I decided to talk to the expert, in this case, Bharat, who is the operations manager at Broomberg, a professional cleaning company, who is an authority on all things cleaning, including vacuum cleaners.
So here is what I learnt from Bharat.
Handheld vs Heavy Duty
Several handheld or compact models were available. These are useful when one has to clean sofas or vacuum dust and dirt from a small area or when portability is necessary. These types of vacuum cleaners are pretty handy but not so useful when it comes to cleaning a house. Recommended if you are the obsessive type.
Wet vs Dry
Bharat recommended that I buy a wet vacuum cleaner as it can be used for both dry as well as wet cleaning. This is great in case you have spilled liquids on your floor or want to wet clean a carpet. This type of vacuum cleaner has a filter that should be removed when using it for wet cleaning. This is very important, your vacuum cleaner can get badly clogged if you use it on a wet floor with the filter still in place.
Vacuum cleaner power
This is the most important factor that needs to be considered while buying a vacuum cleaner online or otherwise. Motor power is measured in watts. For domestic use anything above 1200 watts is good.
Service is important
Regular servicing is very important. Look for a brand that offers good after sales support and on site servicing.
Vacuum cleaner brands
According to Bharat the best vacuum cleaners in India are manufactured by Taski, Karcher, Eureka Forbes and Black & Decker.
Disclaimer: These recommendations are based on personal preferences based on experience. We as a cleaning company are in no way endorsing these brands.
Vacuum cleaner best practices
As I have already mentioned, Bharat is pretty passionate about anything related to cleaning. So passionate in fact that he also gave me some additional gyaan about best practices when using a vacuum cleaner
Check the filter regularly
Key to keeping your vacuum cleaner is good condition is to regularly clean the filter. This is what prevents dust from entering the motor.
Keep dust bags clean
Empty dust bags regularly and in case they are made of cloth, wash them as well.
Switch off for long life
Domestic vacuum cleaners do not have a heavy duty motor that tend to overheat if used continuously. It is a good idea to switch off the motor for 2 to 3 minutes after being in use for 15 – 20 min.
I hope that these recommendations and tips are useful and help you choose the best vacuum cleaner for home. In case you have something to add, do let us know and we’ll include it next time this post is updated.
