Coffee is a fun drink that is popular all over India. It is part of South Indian culture and is also a very popular drink in North India. Coffee stains on clothes and upholstery are pretty hard to get rid of; unless of course you know a few cleaning tricks. In the blog post, I have complied several ways to remove coffee stains from clothes, upholstery, carpets etc.
Cold Water Treatment
Time is of essence. The coffee stained cloth has to be rinsed with water immediately. The cold water should remove most of the stain before it becomes permanent. Soak the cloth in water and in case the stain does not fade soak in a solution of water and detergent for some time, rinse and then wash normally. Do not let the stain dry.
Club Soda Treatment
This treatment is useful for upholstery as well as clothes. In case of a coffee stain, pour club soda liberally on it. Continue blotting the stain until it has completely disappeared.
Mix 3 cups of white vinegar and 1 cup of clean water. Spray this solution on the coffee stain and leave it for 10-15 minutes. Rinse the area and wash the cloth normally using detergent. Air-dry after washing.
In case of a small stain, moisten a cotton ball with undiluted vinegar solution and rub gently. For larger stains, soak the cloth in the vinegar and water solution.
This treatment can also be used for coffee stains on crockery and carpets.
Baking Soda Treatment
For coffee stains on crockery or floor tiles, you can use baking powder. Make a thick paste of baking soda and water and apply it on the stained surface. Allow it to dry and wipe it off with a wet sponge or damp cloth. If the stain is stubborn, scrub it off using an old toothbrush.
The coffee stain can also be dealt with using beer. Rub beer into the stain and repeat if necessary.
Egg Yolk Treatment
Separate the yolk of an egg and beat it well. Add 2 teaspoons of hot water and mix. Apply the mixture on the stain and rub it in for 1-2 minutes. Rinse with normal water. Repeat if required. Wash regularly with detergent.
Take a few granules of salt and put them on the stain. Moisten with a few drops of water and rub two parts of cloth together. Salt granules act as a scrub they also do not harm the cloth since they dissolve quickly. Now, you can wash the cloth normally in detergent and then air-dry.
Commercial Stain Remover Treatment
There are several stain removers like Vanish that are available in the market and are able to help remove all kinds of stubborn stains from clothes. Follow instructions mentioned in the product manual.
There are some clothes like silk dresses and jackets that should not be washed at home. Such clothes can be identified by the wash care instructions on their label that says ‘Dry Clean Only’. You should never try to remove stains from such clothes; some things are better left to the experts. It is a good idea to let the dry cleaners know about stains on such clothes and let them take care of it.
- Do not use washing soap bar on these stains.
- Do not try to clean the stain using a damp cloth as this will just end up spreading the stain.
- Be gentle with the fabric. Rub the stain out gently to avoid damaging the fabric.
- Cold water treatment is the best for cleaning FRESH stains. However, if the stain has been there for a few days, use detergent, vinegar or beer treatment. In case of an old stain, it can be lightened but not completely removed.
- Always rinse off one set of treatment product from the cloth before using another. The point is not to mix chemicals; you never know how they might react.
