How to remove rust stains

Accidentally brushed against something old and rusty? Clothes hung out to dry on a rusted iron wire or hanger? Don’t assume that you will never be able to wear those stained clothes again. Here are some simple, do-it-yourself ways to remove rust stains from clothes.

Before you start, make sure you remove as much rust as possible using a dry cloth or your hand.

Here is how you can get rid of the stain

Use lemon juice

Squeeze some fresh lemon juice on the stain and rub. Make sure you cover the stain completely. Leave it for 10-15 minutes and the stain should disappear on its own. Rinse the cloth with water and launder as normal.

Use white vinegar

Lay the cloth on an old towel and pour white vinegar directly on the stain. Make sure you cover the stain completely. Leave it for about 20-30 minutes and then wash with detergent or in washing machine as usual and dry it in sunlight.

Use salt and lemon juice

Make a paste of salt and lemon juice and rub it over the stain using a toothbrush. Keep the cloth in sunlight and leave it until the stain disappears.

If this does not work, use the same salt and lemon juice paste but this time after leaving it for 10-15 minutes and then pour hot water on the stained area. Launder it normally and repeat this step if necessary. This technique works well on both white as well as colored garments.

  1. Before reading this article I would have thought that to remove rust stains you needed to have a chemical cleaner. I did not know that lemon juice or white vinegar would do the job. I’m sure that there are businesses that could do a better job.
